PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a polymer with an atom- transferring free-radical polymerization in which metal catalysts are efficiently and conveniently removed from the polymer. SOLUTION: In the presence of a polymerization solvent, one or more polymerizable vinyl monomers are polymerized with the atom-transferring free- radical polymerization using an initiator having a radically transferable atom or atomic group and a redox catalyst comprising a metal complex having a transition metal as a central metal to produce a water-insoluble polymer and the polymerization solution containing the polymer and water are contacted. Then, an aqueous phase is separated from an organic phase and the water- insoluble polymer is recovered from the organic phase.
