PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an organic electroluminescent element having high luminous efficiency, allowing to take out light from the surface of the element. SOLUTION: A hole injection electrode 12, a hole carrier layer 14, an organic luminescent layer 16, a hole blocking layer 18, an electron carrier layer 20, a buffer layer 22, and an electron injection electrode 24 are laminated in this order on a substrate 10 to form this organic electroluminescent element. When forming the electron injection electrode 24 by a sputtering method or an ion plating method, damages can be prevented from spreading to the organic luminescent element 16 or the like by the buffer layer 22. In addition, a hole is prevented from passing through from the organic luminescent layer 16 to the electron injection electrode 24 side by providing the hole blocking layer 18 between the buffer layer 18 and the organic luminescent layer 17, and recombination of the electron and the hole in the organic luminescent layer 16 is expedited to enhance luminous efficiency.
