PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a recording device which records digital data to a recording destination in accordance with a prescribed data compression system and permits checking of the residual recordable space corresponding to plural encoding systems without changing the setting of the data compression system. SOLUTION: Display screens A5 to A7 of the remaining time for a previously calculated stereo system, monaural system and ATRAC3-LP2 system as well as ATRAC3-LP4 change over at every key operation of a TIME key in accordance with the address data indicated by a P-FRA of a UTOC0 in an MD1 during loading.
