PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a stoker type incinerator and an incineration method thereby alleviating an environment load by decreasing an air introduction amount and increasing temperature in the incinerator, realizing efficient combustion as the whole of the incinerator, and decreasing an unburnt content of combustible gas. SOLUTION: In the stoker type incinerator 1 for drying, thermally decompositing and burning a substance to be incinerated is supplied in a combustion chamber through a refuse feed opening 2 is while being successively moved on a plurality of stoker stages having a wind box provided below in a combustion chamber, an air feed nozzle 31 is provided to generate combustion gas flowing approximately in parallel to an upper surface wall 30 of a combustion chamber obliquely covering a space above the drying stage 4 being the stoker stage positioned in the vicinity of the refuse feed opening 2 for drying and thermally decompositing. A radiation heat source to effect heat radiation against the surface layer of the substance to be incinerated moved on the drying stage 4 is constituted by heating by the combustion gas, and a high temperature gas flow passing in a manner to make contact with the surface layer is formed.
