In apparatus for electrically connecting at least two terminal posts with a conductor, as described in Specification 1,013,490, the wire feed means are controlled so as to feed wire to the applicator at the speed of movement thereof. The lead screw (437) of the applicator carriage (10), (Fig. 33, not shown) is fitted with a quantisizer disc 454 having clear areas 456 through which light can pass to impinge on two photo-electric cells (462) (Fig. 35, not shown). Pulsating current from these cells is fed to a comparator comprising command and position registers. Movement of the applicator ceases when the number of pulses fed to the position register is equal to the number of pulses previously fed to the command register. The wire feed motor 80 is controlled by light impinging on photo-electric cells 464, 466. If the applicator is travelling in a cardinal direction a speed selector 478 permits the signal in line 476 to pass through the line 482 to the motor. When the applicator is travelling diagonally, the signal from the line 492 passes to the motor and the signal in line 482 is blocked. The speed selection circuits 478 are under the control of a magnetic tape at 479. Shearing.-When the applicator is adjacent a terminal post. to which a wire is to be connected, movement of the applicator is stopped and a shear blade (256) (Fig. 29, not shown) cooperates with a mandrel edge (401) to cut the wire to length. |
