PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a flat platy grain emulsion having enhanced sensitivity, improved graininess and a high aspect ratio. SOLUTION: In the silver halide photographic emulsion, >=80% of the total projected area of all grains is occupied by flat platy grains having an average aspect ratio of >=12, the coefficient of variation in equivalent circular diameter of the projected area of the flat platy grains is <30%, the average surface silver iodide content of the flat platy grains is 5-15 mol%, the surface silver iodide content of regions near the corners of the flat platy grains is <3 mol%, the flat platy grains have >=10 dislocation lines in each side and the dislocation lines are non-iodine gap type.
