PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a tape cassette, with which much more identification information can be transmitted under fixed reliability. SOLUTION: A magnetic tape cassette 10 has parallel recessed parts 50A-50D on the back side of a lower half 14 comprising a cassette case. The depth positions of bottom faces 52A-52D of the recessed parts 50A-50D are not uniform and the recession of the parts 50B and 50D is deep. When the magnetic tape cassette 10 is loaded into a deck 48, probes 54A-54D arranged on the magnetic tape cassette 10 respectively enter the recessed parts 50A-50D. The probes 54A and 54C are respectively pressed by the bottom faces 52A and 52C and the probes 54B and 54D are not pressed. Therefore, the deck 48 reads the identification information detected by a combination of pressing and non-pressing of the probes. Thus, the quantity of identification information can be remarkably increased even without newly providing the recessed part.
