PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and a device capable of determining wiggle noise characteristics of a magnetic head without requiring a long time. SOLUTION: For a plurality of reproducing data, from a histogram regarding the peak (maximum) amplitude of a reproducing waveform or from a histogram regarding trough (minimum) amplitude, the ratio of noise components of reproducing output data to the previous mentioned main signal component is calculated, then an average value and a standard deviation of the noise components ratio to the main signal component is calculated, and the wiggle noise characteristics of the magnetic head is determined based on the average value and the standard deviation.
