The irradiated skeleton (5) of a nuclear reactor fuel assembly comprising parallel guide tubes (8) and spacer grids (9) is disposed of by suspending it by one end over a container (12) on the bottom of a water-filled pond, and lowering it as it is cut into sections by shears (11). Preferred Features: The shears have flat blades pivoting about an axis parallel to that of the guide tubes, opening and closing to squeeze the guide tubes together and cut through them at points between the spacer grids, allowing the sections to drop through a shutter (13) into compartments (14a, 14b) of the container (12). |
