A circuit interrupting device (10) for use with an electrical power distribution system, comprising a circuit interrupter (18) that includes a primary contact (32) and a movable contact (34) movable relative to the primary contact (32) between a closed position allowing current to pass through the circuit interrupter and an open position separating the contacts (32, 34) and preventing the current from passing through the circuit interrupter (18). An actuator (20) is coupled to the circuit interrupter (18). The actuator (20) includes a shaft (58) coupled to the movable contact (34) of the circuit interrupter (18) for substantially simultaneous movement without insulation being disposed between the shaft (58) and the movable contact (34). The shaft (58) moves the movable contact (34) from the closed position of the open position upon occurrence of a fault current. An electronic control (22) is electrically connected to the actuator (20) and in communication with the actuator (20) to trigger the shaft (58) to move the movable contact (34) of the circuit interrupter (18) from the closed position to the open position.
