An image processing apparatus capable of detecting a mixing ratio indicating a mixing state of a plurality of objects. A contour line region information generation block (421) and a normal equation generation block (422) use region specifying information specifying a non−mixed region consisting of a foreground region and a background region and a mixed region where a foreground object component is mixed with a background object component, and motion of the foreground object component, so as to extract contour line region pixel data in an attention frame positioned at a contour line region having an almost identical mixing ratio, extract corresponding pixel data from a frame other than the attention frame, extract background pixel data corresponding to the contour line region pixel data or the corresponding pixel data, and generate an equation with a mixing ratio as unknown. A least square approximation block (423) solves the equation, thereby detecting the mixing ratio. The present invention can be applied to a signal processing apparatus processing an image signal.
