Vehicle computer system has a screen (20) for presentation of information and selection menu, an operating element (22-24) and a character input device (34) with a cursor for selecting characters for input. The device further comprises a counter force unit (30) which acts on the operating element with a counter force, the strength of which is dependent on whether the cursor is over a selectable character or not. An Independent claim is made for a method for controlling a motor vehicle computer in which selectable and non-selectable characters are displayed so that they can be selected using a cursor controlled by an operating element, with a counter force applied to the operating element when it is over a character that cannot be selected.
