<p>The device comprises a support (2) having a locating groove (6) for receiving a fibre, and a fibre retainer (10, 12, 14, 16) mounted on the support to retain the fibre in the locating groove by a bending moment. If a rotation capability is needed, the fibre retainer and the support are rotably mounted to allow the fibre to be rotated about its own axis in the locating groove while being retained in the locating groove by the bending moment, thereby rotating the fibre about its own axis in the locating groove. A simple arrangement and procedure is thus provided that does not require any vacuum or other clamping of the fibre, or any positional adjustment of the fibre after mounting. For rotation, a fundamental operational advantage is that the fibre is rotated about the axis defined by the outer diameter of its own cladding. The optical axis of the fibre core is thus automatically coincident with the rotation axis, with the only error being any small eccentricity of the core location relative to the outer circumferential surface of the fibre's cladding.</p> |
