Disclosed is an injection moulding machine and a method for operating an injection moulding machine for processing thermoplastic synthetic melts, comprising an injection unit (1) and a casting mould wherein the injection unit (1) is provided with a worm (4) which can move in a tubular cylinder (5 ) with the aid of guiding means and which can be controlled with respect to th e start and end/stop position inside the tubular cylinder. When the worm (4) i s in an end/stop position, it leaves open an enlarged remaining volume inside the tubular cylinder (5), which is filled with melt.
