A cylinder lawn mower comprising a rotatable cutting cylinder consisting of a cassette having a first disc-like end piece (9) and a second disc-like end piece (10) the end pieces being connected together by means of an axial hollow tube. The cutting cylinder further comprises a plurality of cutting wires or blades (11) which extend between the two end pieces (9, 10) at an angle to the perpendicular line between them so as to create a ''spiral'' effect (as shown in more detail in Figure 2 of the drawings). The wires (11) may be of extruded nylon filaments. The cutting cylinder, consisting of the two end pieces (9, 10) and the cutting wires (11) is disposed within a cylindrical (shear) cage (8) with removable covers (6) being provided for each end of the cage (8) to completely enclose the cutting cylinder when the lawn mower is in use.
