Process for operating hydrocarbon reformers in fuel cell systems comprises carrying out a high temperature shift stage and/or a low temperature shift stage in converter reactors. Further cooling stages are arranged between the shift stages to lower the temperature of the reformate gas. To optimize the conversion of carbon monoxide, a region is provided for the maximum reaction speed of the carbon monoxide conversion. The volume of the shift stages is provided so that the carbon monoxide conversion decreases with the reaction speed within the prescribed region. Preferred Features: The region provided for the maximum reaction speed of the carbon monoxide conversion is different in individual shift stages. The heat produced in the cooling stage is used in fuel cell systems. |
