Incorporation of an olefinic double bond from (meth)acrylic acid derivatives into thixotropic polyester resin compositions results in an increase in thixotropy, and by reaction of the polyester resin with the unsaturated polyester resin or styrene as reactive thinner improved chemical and weather resistance and high resistance to yellowing are obtained. The thixotropic polyester resin composition (TPRC) contains a solvent and at least one unsaturated polyester a1 in a reactive solvent a2 containing at least one olefinically unsaturated group, a thixotropic agent b, obtained by reaction of a reaction product b1 from a multifunctional, linear, branched or cyclic aliphatic isocyanate b11 and an olefinically unsaturated OH group containing compound b12 with an aliphatic or araliphatic amine b2, where the amino group is always bonded to an aliphatic carbon atom, the ratio of isocyanate groups in b11 to the number of OH groups in b12 is 1:0.2 to 1:0.6, and the isocyanate groups in b1 are completely consumed by reaction with amine b2. An Independent claim is included for preparation of the thixotropic polyester resin composition, in which by reaction of a multifunctional isocyanate b11 with an olefinically unsaturated, OH group containing compound b12 an isocyanate-functional unsaturated compound b1 is obtaine d, which finally reacts with amine b2 with complete consumption of the isocyanate groups in b1, to give a thixotropic agent b, which is added to the solution of unsaturated polyester a1 in a reactive solvent a2, which contains at least one olefinically unsaturated group.
