WEAR LEVELING OF STATIC AREAS IN FLASH MEMORY

A method for wear leveling data storage units of a flash media (12), with a decrease in usage of system resources. An algorithm ensures that static areas do not remain static by using a process where static data within such areas are moved to other physical locations. After a large number of write or erase operations (10) by the Flash data manager, a data unit is selected by a process (11) such that successive selections ultimately select all data units, then the selected data unit is moved (16) to a free unit location and the selected data unit is erased.
