The device has a beam divider (2) and filters and detectors (8,9) in the partial light paths (3,4) after the beam divider. Each filter has a doubly refracting layer (5,6) for converting linearly polarized light into elliptically polarized light and a layer (7) after it in the direction of incidence of a material in the cholesterinic phase. The filters differ in dependency on transmission of the polarization direction of the incident light.
