Slide gate filling composition contains chromium ore, a component containing predominantly silicon dioxide, and optionally a fine auxiliary material. The component containing predominantly silicon dioxide is composed of a quartz sand of high purity and a component containing a fluxing agent. An Independent claim is also included for: a process for the production of a slide gate filling composition. Preferred Features: The quartz sand contains more than 99.5 % SiO2 with a maximum grain size of not more than 1.2 mm. The fluxing agent is made from feldspar. The feldspar to quartz ratio is 1:1-20. The chromium ore is present in an amount of 30-85 weight %.
