A wheelchair system for transferring an occupant to a motor vehicle includes a wheeled chassis (1') whose front end is rolled beneath a vehicle door opening, a horizontal extending base member (26), and a rotatable mounting mechanism (5) for the base member (26). The rotatable mounting mechanism (5) includes a first actuating linkage and a first driven member. The wheelchair system also includes a chair supporting frame located centrally of the chassis (1') and removably mounted on the base member (26). The chair supporting frame includes an adjusting mechanism for vertically adjusting a support. A handle assembly (16') is removably mounted on the chassis (1') and includes a second linkage (63) for rotating the first driven member. The second linkage (63) includes a removable driving member which removably connects to the first driven member as the handle is removed and connected to the chassis (1'), and a second driven member at an opposite end.
