FIELD: inorganic chemistry, chemical technology. SUBSTANCE: invention relates to method of preparing yttrium oxide useful for making super-strength alloys and optical ceramics. Method involves mixing ammonium carbonate solution as precipitating agent with the parent yttrium nitrate solution. Concentration of yttrium nitrate in solution is 60-80 g/l as measured for oxide. Solution comprises ammonium nitrate as desalting agent taken in the amount 3-4 N. Method provides preparing yttrium oxide powder with the mean size of grains less 0.03 mcm.
