PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a paper sheet conveying device capable of controlling vibration of a stepping motor even in a low speed range, preventing stepping-out due to resonance, and performing clutchless control even if a ratio of the maximum and the minimum rotation speeds of a paper sheet conveying roller is large, and a method for controlling the same. SOLUTION: In a paper sheet conveying device conveying a paper sheet 3 by conveying rollers (roller pair 4, 5) and driving the conveying roller by the stepping motor 11, a type of the paper sheet 3 conveyed by the conveying roller is distinguished by a paper type distinguishing means 2, a constant current flowing in the stepping motor 11, an excitation method of the stepping motor 11, and a clock frequency of the excitation signal inputted to the stepping motor 11 are switched a constant current switching means 12, an excitation mode setting means 7 and a clock frequency switching means 15 according to the judgment result.
