PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an apparatus for recovering an ink jet printer which is simple in structure and by which a discharge ink is efficiently sucked at a recovery process time and the printer can be made compact with a space necessary for installation reduced. SOLUTION: The recovery apparatus for the ink jet printer comprises a recovery unit 18 having a wiper 34 and a cap 43. In carrying out the recovery process, the recovery unit is inserted to below a printing head. An upper part of the cap 43 with the wiper 34 retreated is moved in a +Y direction to wipe an ink discharge face 15A10 of the printing head. In a state with the wiper 34 retreated to the outside of a movement truck of the cap 43, the cap 43 is raised to cap the ink discharge face 15A10 of the printing head. Ink is discharged and sucked for cleaning in the capping state.
