PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a safety device of an elevator capable of safely stopping a car 8 in a short distance when the car 8 goes beyond the uppermost floor TF to reduce the top clearance and reduce an overhead. SOLUTION: A buffer 22 is installed in one of a hoist way 1 and the car 8 between a side wall 2 of the hoist way 1 and the side part 10 of the car 8, and an abutting body 23 abutting on the buffer 22 is fitted to the other thereof. When the car 8 goes beyond the uppermost floor TF, the abutting body 23 abuts on the buffer 22 to stop the car 8, thereby inhibiting collision with the top 3a of the hoistway.
