PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To eliminate the useless winding operation and waste consumption of a bobbin thread by detecting whether or not winding is a failure in an initial stage from the start of winding the bobbin thread to a bobbin inside a shuttle in the bobbin winding device of a sewing machine. SOLUTION: The bobbin winding device guides a thread for the bobbin thread to the bobbin inside the shuttle, rotates the bobbin and winds the bobbin thread. The bobbin thread residual amount sensor of the bobbin is installed, the thread amount of the bobbin is detected by using the residual amount sensor after the rotation of the bobbin for the prescribed number of rotation (after 30 rotations, for instance) after the winding of the bobbin thread is started, and whether or not the winding of the bobbin thread is the failure is detected. Then, at detecting that the winding of the bobbin thread is the failure, the winding of the bobbin thread is stopped and the fact that the winding of the bobbin thread is the failure is displayed at the display part of the sewing machine and reported to an operator.
