PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To vividly display characters by automatically separating character data and its background data from image data and emphasizing and displaying the separat ed character data. SOLUTION: The density value of a pixel Gi under consideration is compared with an average density value of a prescribed square area S including the pixel Gi in the coordinate center to classify respective pixels G constituting image data into pixels of a high density value and pixels of a low density value, and prescribed band areas where the preliminarily determined number of or more pixels of the high density value or the low density value are continuously arranged out of prescribed band areas each of which is constituted of the prescribed number of pixels G continuously arranged in the direction of an X coordinate are taken as the first separation candidate image area. When other prescribed band areas taken as the first separation candidate image areas which are taken as the first separation candidate image areas, exist in prescribed spaces in a positive direction and a negative direction, in the direction of a Y coordinate, this prescribed center band area is taken as the second separation candidate image area, and the second separation candidate image area is emphasized and displayed on the image data.
