PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a surface acoustic wave element where a surface acoustic wave of an SH type is reflected between two opposed end faces of a piezoelectric substrate on the surface of which interdigital transducer electrodes are formed, where frequency adjustment is easily performed while ensuring the reliability of the surface acoustic wave element and to provide its manufacturing method. SOLUTION: The frequency of the surface acoustic wave element is adjusted by additionally forming a frequency adjustment material to at least one end face in two opposed end faces of the piezoelectric substrate or etching the frequency adjustment material after being additionally formed so as to change a wavelength of the surface acoustic wave.
