PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a recoding and reproducing device which minimizes user's burden of operation and enables efficient recording by automatically changing recording mode for information exceeding recoding capacity into recording mode with a higher compression rate. SOLUTION: A control section 2, in the process of automatic recording and editing of an MD, extracts data of a specified track of a CD to be recorded from a CD information storage section 7 and generates a recording data table making the data correspond to the recording mode specified by a user when recording on an MD. The control section 2, based on MD recordable time and the generated recoding data table, makes a recording time calculation section 9 calculate necessary recoding time, and controls automatic recoding mode changing process in which recording mode is successively rewritten from the last recoding data of the recoding data table 81 until the necessary recording time is accommodated in MD recordable time.
