PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a display device in which the performance to identify a screen saver and a normal operation is enhanced and as a result, the probability of inadvertently executing a power saving operation during a normal operation is reduced. SOLUTION: Video signals are inputted to a pixel converting section 3. In the section 3, a flat panel 6 is controlled based on the inputted video signals and various video images are displayed on a display screen 7 by varying the amount of light shielding from the light beams of a back light 8. A microcomputer 5 receives signal level comparison results from the section 3 and transmits luminance adjusting signals to a back light inverter 4. Moreover, the microcomputer 5 makes various settings for the section 3 and reads video signals being inputted into the section 3 from the section 3. The inverter 4 applies a prescribed voltage to the back light 8 based on the received luminance adjusting signals in order to adjust the luminance of the back light 8.
