PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a digital signal recording and reproducing device and method for dividing the same file into a plurality of drive areas and recording/ reproducing them in order to attain the effective use of a limited storage area and the continuity of data. SOLUTION: The free capacity of the drive area and a data file capacity are compared with each other by OS, and drive area information of the divided files and FAT are provided on a nonvolatile semiconductor memory to divide, record and reproduce a data file in each drive area.
