PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image scanner which has high operability and requires a small installation area. SOLUTION: The image scanner is provided with a feed tray, a feed means which feeds out a document from the feed tray, a carrying means which carries the document to a read position along a contact glass, an ejection means which ejects the document, an ejection tray, and a read means which reads the documents, and the read means consists of a light source, a lens which forms an image of reflected light, and an image sensor for photoelectric conversion. In this image scanner the carrying means and the contact glass are arranged approximately perpendicularly to the installation surface of the image scanner so that the carrying route from the feed tray to the ejection tray may be made approximately channel-shaped, and the feed tray and the ejection tray are arranged on the carrying means side so that they may be approximately parallel with the installation surface of the image scanner and may be vertically separated from each other, and the document from the feed tray is carried to and fixed to the read position in the approximately vertical carrying route between the carrying means and the contact glass, and at least a part of the read means is moved upward or downward to read the document.
