PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the mean luminance and picture quality of a plasma display by effectively using a limited dynamic range. SOLUTION: This plasma display is equipped with a level detection part 6 which detects the level of an input video signal, a gain control part 7 which controls the gain of the input video signal according to the detection signal from the level detection part 6, a luminance control part 8 which performs luminance control by controlling the number of maintaining discharge pulses of a PDP 4 obtained with the signal of the gain control part 7 according to the detection signal from the level detection part 6, and a display means which displays images by driving the PDP 4 with the signal from the luminance control part 8, and effectively uses the limited dynamic range.
