PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a simple method and instrument for judging the life of the lead battery, which can certainly detect the life even the battery suddenly became impossible to be used. SOLUTION: This invention comprises providing a rest time during charging of the lead battery, detecting the open circuit potential of the lead battery during the rest time and judging the lead battery to be the life when the open circuit potential is less than that of previously set value. This invention is the method and instrument, for example, the method for judging the life of the battery charged with a generator mounted on a car, wherein the rest time is set in the way of charging the battery from the generator and the open circuit potential of the battery is detected during the rest time and judges the battery to be the life if the detected potential of the battery is less than the value that is previously set.
