PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic recording medium suitable for high density recording, that is excellent in surface smoothness of a magnetic recording layer and running durability. SOLUTION: This medium is a magnetic recording medium provided with a magnetic recording layer 11 which mainly consists of a ferromagnetic powder and a binder on a non-magnetic support (base film 10). In this medium, the binder is a polyurethane resin whose glass transition point is 90 deg.C or more, and the amount of residual solvent contained in the magnetic recording layer of 1 g is in a range of from 3 mg or more to 10 mg or less. And the three- dimensional average surface roughness of the magnetic recording layer 11 is in a range of from 3 nm or more to 7 nm or less.
