The invention relates to a method for cleaning surfaces, metallic surfaces in particular. The method for cleaning a surface on which chemical species Z are fixed by means of adsorption or chemisorption is characterized by bringing the surface into contact with an aqueous solution which can shift the adsorption or chemisorption balance of the chemical species Z in order to introduce said species into the aqueous solution, whereupon the aqueous solution comprising chemical species (Z) is separated from the surface thus cleaned. The invention can be used for decontaminating stainless steel surfaces contaminated by caesium by means of an acid acqeous solution having a pH of 2 to 4.
