Signals are received on a stationary part of the machine from an electromagnetic or ultrasonic wave transmitter on a rotating part, the signals having been fed to a signal adaptor unit where they are suitably processed and encoded for transmission and identification. Preferably the signals are transmitted in a start-stop format and may use parallel signal paths if the amount of data or speed requires it. They are then decoded in an evaluating unit and evaluated for signal output.
