To modernize a spinning machine, and especially an open-end spinner, the longitudinal carrier for the workstations is dismantled, together with all the workstation units. Replacement units (4), with an even number of spinning stations (2), are fitted into place with adapters (42,43). The replacement unit has bearing mountings for the feed rollers, to deliver the sliver to the spinning stations. An even number of replacement units are fitted, to take up the length of the open-end spinning machine.
