The side wall comprises an outer wall, inner wall and deformation element comprising a deformation profile (4) mounted on the inner wall on the side facing the trim (3) and extending in the longitudinal direction of the vehicle. The deformation profile has on its long sides adjoining the inner wall at least two steps (5) in the vehicle longitudinal direction with an impact wall (6) set spaced from the inner wall and between the stepped longitudinal sides. The deformation profile which can be made from sheet metal can have ideal bend lines provided in the vehicle longitudinal direction.
