The railway freight wagon (10a-10c), for the transport and storage of loose bulk materials e.g. ballast for the permanent way, is divided into a number of container sections (40a-40c,42a-42c) within the wagon units. Each wagon has a conveyor system at the base, to move the material from one end to the other. Conveyors (72a,72b) are between the wagons, to transfer the material from one to the other. The conveyor speeds are set to give a material storage function, and a material transfer action.
