POLARIZATION CONVERSION ELEMENT AND PROJECTION TYPE LIQUID CRYSTAL DISPLAY DEVICE THEREBY

PURPOSE: A polarization conversion element and a projection liquid crystal display apparatus thereby are provided to improve the contrast of the liquid crystal display apparatus and the display quality by displaying evenly. CONSTITUTION: A polarization conversion element is formed by laminating two optical compensation plates(22,23) formed by applying a liquid crystalline compound on a base material film, a linear polarizing plate(21) and a transparent glass plate(24). Two optical compensation plates are positioned on the surface of the linear polarizing plate. A reflection preventing layer(27) is preferably provided on the surface coming in contact with the air of the optical compensation plate. An optical retardation plate is layered on the surface opposite to the optical compensation plate of the linear polarization plate. The linear polarizing plate and two optical compensation plates are also laminated on one surface and on the other surface of the glass plate respectively. The polarization conversion element is disposed on one surface of a liquid crystal cell to form the projection type liquid crystal display device.
