[Also in Division G1] Sinter mix is analysed by compressing , a sample of the mix in a mould to form a pellet and presenting the pellet to an X-ray fluorescence analyser head. The sinter mix is fed to a hopper 35 whence it passes through valves 36 and 37 to moulds M. When the moulds are charged, the plate 30 removes surplus mix and provides a base against which hydraulic rams 38 and 39 compress the charge in the mould. After the rams have been withdrawn a pawl and ratchet rotate the turret 10 through 45 degrees about its axis 12 to bring the compressed charges to a testing station and present empty moulds to the hopper 35 for filling. At the testing station the charges are irradiated with X-rays from a radioisotope, and characteristic fluorescent X-rays are detected by a gas-filled or gas flow proportional counter and recorded. The dwell time in each position is 25 to 100 seconds. After testing the charges reach a station 17 where they are ejected by pushers 52, 53. The operation of the apparatus is controlled by an electrical timing circuit, Fig. 4 (not shown). |
