A tension member for an elevator system comprises cords having wires twisted into a center strand. A polymeric inner coating encases the center strand. Second wires are twisted into the outer strands, which in turn are twisted around the polymeric inner coating. A polymeric common coating encases the cords. The cords are parallel and spaced evenly across the width of the tension member. A tension member for an elevator system comprises cords having wires twisted into a center strand. An Independent claim is also included for a method of making the tension member, comprising forming the cords by building the center strand and the outer strands, extruding the polymeric common coating around the center strand or pre-impregnating and curing the center strand with a thermoset material, and positioning the outer strands around the common coating. The cords are then positioned in an even spaced transverse and parallel to one another, and are coated in the polymeric common coating.
