To raise a metal window sash 3 from the closed position shown prior to horizontally sliding the window open, a hand crank in aperture 8 is rotated to raise via eccentric 7, 7' a connecting link 11, thereby disengaging a locking element 17 integral therewith from a stationary locking member (18), this action simultaneously pulling a trolley 14 to the left while a pivoted link between the trolley and the sash is rotated to the vertical to raise said sash, the trolley 14 riding on wheels 15 on a window frame rail 1. The raised window may then be slid open to the right of the Fig. shown. The locking element 17 comprises two spacedapart projections, Fig. 5 (not shown), the space therebetween containing the rail 1 when the link 11 is in the locking position, while an inverted U-shaped member 5 on the internal side of the sash supports the trolley, a lug 21 for the sash-raising link 22, Fig. 2 (not shown) and the lock casing 6.
