The method involves measuring and/or calculating the signals from several radio stations (1) at a number of locations, and storing a reference station-pattern database comprising position information. A mobile radio apparatus (2) receives the signals from multiple radio stations and forms a position-dependent station pattern. By comparing the received station pattern with the reference station-patterns in the database, the cross-reference to a reference station-pattern is established and used to determine the position of the mobile radio apparatus. An Independent claim is also included for a system of determining the position of a mobile radio apparatus.
