A process for the production of tetracycline by fermentation

Tetracycline is produced by the submerged fermentation in a liquid medium containing assimilable carbon and nitrogen and inorganic salts under aerobic conditions of micro-organisms of the genus Streptomyces capable of producing both chlorotetracycline and tetracycline, by the addition to the fermentation medium of at least one chlorination inhibitor corresponding to the general formula wherein Z is H, OH or Cl; X is halogen, preferably Cl or iodine, or is akyl, aryl, H, NH2 or NO2; and Y is H, Cl, NH2 or COOH. Alternatively, X and Y may be members of a second 5- or 6-membered aromatic or heterocyclic ring e.g. 2,6 - dichloro - 7 - methyl purine. Other specified inhibitors are 2,4-dichloro-pyrimidine, 5 - iodo - 2,4 - dichloro pyrimidine, 5 - methyl-2,4,6 - trichloro - pyrimidine and 5 - methyl-2,4-dichloropyrimidine.
