PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To perform machining accurately with a depth of cut kept constant for a workpiece by measuring a distribution of height accurately on a working surface for a tool. SOLUTION: A distribution of height on a working surface for a tool 3 is measured with an optical non-contact displacement meter 13 which measures optical focal distance directly. On the basis of measured distribution of height on the working surface for the tool 3, a depth of cut on the workpiece 1 for the tool 3 is adjusted so that the depth of cut on the workpiece 1 for the tool 3 becomes constant.
