A method of deploying a tool from within a producing well comprises halting the flow of fluid in the well, releasing the tool to free fall down the well, and then resuming the flow of fluid to return the tool to the wellhead. Predetermined time delays between halting and resuming the flow allow the tool to obtain a certain depth at which it measures a property of the well. The tool may be deployed from a carousel (figure 3) sealed inside the wellhead. Another invention comprises injecting sensors (124, figure 8) into the well fluid and retrieving data. The sensors may be introduced via chemical injection ports in the well. Also disclosed is a robot (150, figure 10) sealed in a well to perform operations. The robot may be a tractor and may be independent or tethered to control electronics. Should the robot become trapped, it may collapse and release a buoyant indicator (204, figure 12). |
