PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize an accurate skew correcting mechanism capable of handling various kinds of documents and capable of coping with a large quantity of skew with a simple method. SOLUTION: Sensors 7, 8 and 9 recognize direction and quantity of a skew of the document 1 carried left, and in the case of setting a left end (frame 26 reference) of the document as a carrying reference, when a rightward skew is recognized, a left side drive roller 11a is normally rotated by the skew quantity with a right side drive roller 12a stopped to correct the skew of the document. When the leftward skew is recognized, the right side drive roller 12a is normally rotated with the left side drive roller 11a stopped to generate the rightward skew once, and thereafter, the document is moved backward, and the left side drive roller 11a is normally rotated by the skew quantity in the condition that the right side drive roller 12a is stopped to correct the skew.
