PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a pigment dispersion having improved dispersion degree and low viscosity and effective for increasing the printing speed of an aqueous recording liquid for ink jet recording and improving the quality of printed image. SOLUTION: A mixture composed at least of a pigment and an aqueous medium is passed through a dispersion apparatus to obtain an aqueous dispersion of pigment for water-based recording liquid. In the above production process, the ratio of the total dispersion time to the sum of the average retention time of the mixture in the dispersion apparatus is set to >=2.
